Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurvedic Medicine

In Sanskrit, Ayur means Life, and Veda means Knowledge or Science. Ayurveda, the ancient medicinal system of India, is a Science of Life.

Ayurveda is the most holistic medical system available to humanity today. What does holistic mean? Holistic means integral, that is, Ayurveda considers the human being as an organized whole and not as the sum of its parts. Mind, body and spirit are united at the level of consciousness and exert direct reciprocal effects on each other. Ayurveda has emphasized for thousands of years the causal role of thought and behavior in health and disease. Therefore, Ayurveda is not simply a medicine but a Philosophy of Life.

According to Ayurveda, the five universal elements are present in every being: Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The unique combination of these five elements in each of us will determine who we are. Knowing ourselves, knowing which Dosha predominates in us, will help us make optimal decisions, both at a nutritional level and for the care of our skin.

The five universal elements combine to give rise to three vital forces known as Doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

Vata Dosha:

Elements: Space and Air

The Force of Movement

  • The root Va, in Sanskrit, means movement. Space and Air predominate in Vata people. The attributes of the Vata dosha are: dry, cold, mobile, fast, light, rough and irregular.
  • The dry attribute causes them to have dry skin, dry hair, a dry voice, to be thin, with a tendency towards constipation and little perspiration.
  • The attributes of mobile and quick make them very active, quick to act and think. They are creative, imaginative and frequently change interests.
  • The cold attribute causes them to have cold extremities, intolerance to cold and a tendency toward stiff joints.
  • The most common imbalances in your skin are: dehydration, wrinkles and premature aging.

Pitta Dosha:

Elements: Fire and Air

The Power of Digestion and Transformation

  • Fire and Water predominate in Pitta dosha. The attributes of Pitta are hot, sharp, penetrating, pungent and slightly oily.
  • People with a predominance of Pitta are of medium physical constitution, have soft, sensitive, warm skin and fine hair. They are prone to premature graying and baldness.
  • Physiologically they are strong. They have good digestion, a good appetite, and if they don’t eat when they are hungry they get in a bad mood.
  • They are sharp and have an excellent ability to understand concepts. They are good speakers and leaders. They have a passionate character and a lot of determination.
  • The most common imbalances in your skin are: redness, itching, eczema, inflammation and rosacea.

Kapha Dosha:

Elements: Water and Earth

The Strength of Structure and Cohesion

  • Water and Earth predominate in Kapha. Kapha attributes are oily, dense, firm, slow, stable, heavy and cool.
  • People with a Kapha constitution have solid and robust body structures, with powerful and strong muscles. They tend to gain weight.
  • The unctuous attribute makes their skin soft and oily, and their hair thick.
  • The slow attribute makes their digestion slow. They speak slowly and their movements are slow. Kapha is slow but sure. They do not get angry easily, but when they do get angry, they find it difficult to forget. They are loyal and have a calm presence.

IS AYURVEDA TRENDY?

Ayurveda is a science that is becoming increasingly well-known in our society, however, Ayurveda is not a fad, it has been practiced in India for more than 5000 years. It is not an empty science, it is the oldest medical system available to humanity today, and it is, in addition to medicine, a philosophy and a way of life.

IS IT SUSTAINABLE, NATURAL AND VEGAN?

Ayurveda is a medicine based on natural ingredients, and therefore, it is a natural medicine. Its fundamental principle is “NON-VIOLENCE”, not integrating any ingredient that contains cruelty or violence. Therefore, it is a vegetarian medicine. It uses honey, milk and ghee, which are animal ingredients, as long as they are obtained with respect, and without exploiting the animal. It cannot be said that it is vegan because it sometimes uses honey and milk, but it can be firmly stated that it is VEGETARIAN, NATURAL, SUSTAINABLE AND NON-VIOLENT.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL AND AYURVEDIC COSMETICS?

Ayurvedic cosmetics are always natural cosmetics, but not all natural cosmetics are based on the principles of Ayurvedic medicine.

Ayurvedic cosmetics are based on the deep knowledge that Ayurveda has of plants to nourish, rejuvenate and restore balance to the skin. In other words, Ayurvedic cosmetics are cosmetics made from natural ingredients, which select certain plants (leaves, stems, flowers and seeds) to achieve health, balance and luminosity of the skin: plants as food and medicine for the skin.
